Still have a steel tank and/or piping buried in the ground? The current regulations still allow this outdated system, but require testing to ensure your cathodic protection (CP) system is working correctly and protecting your steel system from corrosion.
CP systems are either sacrificial or implied current. Both system can protect buried metal form corroding; however, both systems can also fail. With a CP system failure often going unnoticed to the tank owner/operator, periodic testing is required. Testing is also required after any repairs to the system. CP testing can be done without intrusive methods, and most of the time can be performed without taking the system off line. Keep your metal fuel system safe from corrosion, and keep your records up to date for upcoming inspections by having your cathodic protection system tested.
